How to add cross-selling to your ScaleEdges store

Recommend a complementary product at a discount when a buyer adds another one to their cart, and increase your average order value from Marketing → Cross-selling.

Cross-selling in ScaleEdges recommends a second product, at a discount, when a buyer adds a specific product to their cart. For example, a buyer who adds your Lightroom Presets Pack is offered your Photo Editing Masterclass at 20% off. You set it up in Marketing → Cross-selling by choosing the trigger product, the recommended product and the discount. It is included in every plan.

What is cross-selling and why use it?

Cross-selling means offering a complementary product to someone who is already buying. Because the buyer has already decided to purchase, a relevant, discounted recommendation converts far better than a cold offer.

Cross-selling helps you:

  • increase your average order value without finding new customers;
  • introduce buyers to other products they would not have discovered;
  • reward the purchase decision with a discount that only applies to this combination;
  • run automatically on every order, with no manual follow-up.

What is the difference between cross-selling and upselling?

  • Cross-selling recommends a different, complementary product in the cart and at checkout, at a discount, while the buyer is purchasing.
  • Upselling in ScaleEdges presents an offer inside the content a customer has already purchased, for example an upgrade to a bigger bundle. See How to create upsells in ScaleEdges.

Both can run at the same time.

What do you need before creating a cross-sell?

  • At least two products in your store. The + New cross-sell button stays disabled until then.
  • A paid recommended product. A discount cannot be applied to a free product.

How do you create a cross-sell in ScaleEdges?

  1. Open Marketing → Cross-selling.
  2. Select + New cross-sell.
  3. Under When this product is added to the cart…, choose the trigger product, the one the buyer adds first.
  4. Under …promote this product, choose the recommended product. It must be different from the trigger product.
  5. Choose the Discount type: Percentage (%) or Fixed amount.
  6. Enter the Discount value, for example 20 for 20% off.
  7. Select Create cross-sell.

Each trigger product can have one cross-sell. To promote something else for the same product, edit the existing cross-sell.

How do you customize the cart message?

Open Advanced options before creating or editing the cross-sell:

  • Text displayed in the cart: your own sentence, up to 300 characters. Insert {reduction} to show the discount and {produit} to show the clickable name of the recommended product. For example: Complete your editing kit: get {reduction} off {produit} when you buy them together. Leave it empty to use the default text.
  • Button text: the label of the button, for example Add to my order. By default, it reads Add to cart.
  • Show the recommended product image: checked by default. Uncheck it to show a cart icon instead.

Write a message about the benefit for the buyer, not only about the discount. Explain in a few words why the two products work well together.

What do your buyers see?

  1. A buyer adds the trigger product to their cart, or opens its checkout page.
  2. The offer appears with your message, the recommended product and the discount.
  3. When they add the recommended product, the discount is applied to it automatically, as long as the trigger product stays in the cart.

The cart shows the discount next to the recommended product. If the buyer removes the trigger product, the recommended product returns to its regular price.

How do you change the look of the offer at checkout?

Open the Checkout builder and select the cross-selling section. You can change its Title, its Subtitle and its Layout: Card, Horizontal banner or Compact.

How do you edit or delete a cross-sell?

The Cross-selling table lists each Product in cart, its Recommended product and the Discount:

  • select Edit to change the products, the discount or the message;
  • select Delete to stop the offer immediately.

Which products should you pair together?

The best cross-sells feel like the natural next step for the buyer:

  • a product and its advanced version, such as a beginner template pack and a pro template pack;
  • a product and its training, such as a preset pack and a video course on how to use it;
  • complementary formats, such as an ebook and its companion workbook;
  • your best seller as the recommendation for newer or cheaper products, to spread its reach.

Start with a discount between 10% and 30%, then compare your results in your analytics after a few weeks.
